Restaurant review: Woodstok - Bangalore, India


It is the first time I'm reviewing a restaurant outside Singapore so it feels a bit odd. Like I said in one of my previous posts, I'm currently in Bangalore and having quite a marvelous time 😊 That being said, I can't help but feel slightly out of place in this city. I am not familiar with the geography of Bangalore and the traffic here just drives me nuts so I prefer being at home, venturing out to nearby places only. There is no dearth of fabulous restaurants here but I hardly ever get to try them out mostly due to lack of time or the preconceived notion of weariness resulting from the aforementioned traffic. 

This holiday we had some catching up to do with a new acquaintance and having some free time, we decided to go out for dinner. We settled on Woodstok in Indiranagar after checking out their expansive menu. What sets this restaurant apart from other restaurants is the fact that this is a huge bungalow that has been transformed into an eatery. The layout of the restaurant with its separate distinctive dining rooms, dual floors, winding staircase and open balcony, gives it a warm and homely vibe. The ambience is casual and relaxed and it reflects the greatest musical extravaganza of our times.

The menu offers a wide range of vegetarian and meat-based dishes from different parts of the globe. It features hot favourites from Italy, France, Mexico, Middle East, North America and the Orient.

To kickstart the evening, we ordered a strawberry mojito and a green apple mojito which were quite nice.


There were plenty of starters on the menu so choosing them seemed like quite a challenge. To allow for a greater variety of sampling, we ordered the vegetarian Woodstok platter. This came with onion rings, cheesy soldiers (mozzarella cheese sticks) and loaded potato skins which were served with a sweet chilli soy sauce, marinara sauce and sour cream. I particularly liked the loaded potato skins because they were packed with flavour. The onion rings and cheese sticks were good. The sweet chilli soy sauce seemed a bit out of place and I didn't think that it was very compatible with the starters on the platter.



Next we ordered the vegetarian snack sampler. Again we got to sample three different starters 😆 We had the option of choosing any three starters of our choice from a selection of seven snacks. We picked (from L to R) the classic corn and cheese patties, mushrooms wrapped in wonton and honey chilli potato. I really liked the corn and cheese patties. They were probably my favourite. The crispy potato glazed in a honey chilli sauce was quite delicious too. The mushrooms wrapped in wonton was nothing special although I did like the cheesy dipping sauce. 



For the main course, I wanted the chimichanga because I like saying chimichanga :P We ordered the vegetarian version. The description on the menu said that it consisted of sautéed English vegetables and cottage cheese wrapped in a tortilla, deep-fried and served with Mexican rice and sour cream, salsa and guacamole on the side. Now who on earth could say no to that? The deep-fried tortilla and the dips were quite good but there was nothing Mexican about the rice. It tasted quite Indian to be honest. The portion of rice was a bit too generous as well. 



I love ravioli so much that I would order it at any restaurant that serves Italian food. No surprises that I ordered the ravioli pasta stuffed with spinach and cooked in a herbed cheese sauce. It was stated to be the chef's signature dish. There were two slices of garlic bread served alongside the pasta. The dish was fine but nothing to write home about. The sauce was a bit stodgy and needed a touch more seasoning. I've had better ravioli in Singapore. 



My verdict:
Woodstok is a good place to chill with friends or with colleagues after work. If the restaurant is full, it probably could feel congested so I would recommend that you make a reservation in advance. There is a wide selection of drinks and an impressive selection of International dishes. The service was quite good. The waiter took our orders promptly, the food arrived in good time and the staff made enquiries as to whether we were satisfied with our meal. I would consider the price slightly steep by Indian standards with an average price of 800-1000 INR (could be more depending on the bar orders) per person so make sure your wallet is well equipped.
