Invited Review
Although I am not a Pinterest mom by any stretch of imagination, I do encourage my almost-six year old twin daughters to dabble in arts and crafts every now and then. They enjoy the process, it stimulates their creativity and it keeps them occupied (read: out of trouble) for a solid hour or more. But you know the one thing I don't like? The MESS. Especially when it comes to painting. Setting up the painting "station" as I like to call it and cleaning up later, is at least half an hour's worth of work. Not to mention, it also involves close supervision for the entire duration of the activity lest the girls mix up all the primary colors or get paint splatters all over the floor, furniture or on each other!
So when I heard about Splat Paint House, a splatter paint studio located at Upper Thomson road that lets you play with paints minus any rules, boundaries or stress, I just KNEW that I had to take my family there so we could unleash our creativity without restrictions.
All you have to do is first book a time slot. The studio follows safe distancing measures and wearing a mask is compulsory so even with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, rest assured that the environment is as safe as it can be. If you are still concerned, I suggest to head over when it is generally quieter, such as weekday evenings after 5pm.
On entering the studio, we took our shoes off and slipped on shoe covers. It is advisable to dress in clothes that you don't mind getting spattered or else suit up in coveralls. Hair nets and safety glasses are also available if you need them. I dressed myself and the kids up in ratty old clothes and we even had the coveralls on so I was the least bit worried about messed up clothes.
Once we were inside the spacious and paint-drenched studio, we put on some slippers that were provided and our smiling and friendly host proceeded to play a short video to introduce some art techniques for inspiration. I found this to be quite helpful. My offsprings, on the other hand, were finding it difficult to pay attention to the video as all they were interested in was getting their hands on some paint as soon as possible.
We were given a 40x50cm canvas each and a choice of 4 paint colours.
There are lots of "tools" that you can use such as different sized paint brushes, cups, string, straws, balloons, marbles, ice-cream sticks, syringes and squirt bottles. Everything is fair game. Depending on what tools you use and how you use the colours, you can create a variety of fantastic patterns and designs.
Remember, there is no right or wrong. Put your imagination in the driver's seat, sit back and have a blast!
You can hang your painting straight up on the walls or else choose to use the tables or else use both.

Rather than doing something abstract, I attempted to paint something on the lines of a starry night sky. With absolutely no artistic background, the theme was probably out of my league. But with no set expectations or pressure, I felt like I was transported back to my childhood.
Also, I never thought I would use a balloon to aid in painting. You learn something everyday 😊
My kids had been bursting to get started and it seemed like they were determined to explore every possible resource made available to them. From the corner of my eye, I spotted them experimenting gleefully with every single tool. They used the colours separately and mixed them up as well. But you know, when it comes to art, what separates good artists from the rest is knowing when to stop. My little ones got so carried away with trying everything that at the end of 1 hour, the resulting canvas ended up with a riot of colors all merging together to form a homogenous layer of murky brown 😂 No contenders for the title of art prodigy over here but the girls had heaps of fun (which is what really matters) and I literally had to beg them to go home so I'd say the session was a big hit indeed.
There are giant racks where you can leave the painting to dry. If you have leftover paint, you can request for another canvas (at an additional charge). The paintings generally take 48 hours to dry so you can come back later to collect your masterpiece. If you are not able to, delivery can be arranged for $25 to one location, up to 5 canvases, additional $3 for each extra canvas. Remember that the studio stores the canvases only upto 2 weeks.

There are different packages available and considering art supplies can work out to be expensive and here you don't even have to clean up, I'd say the prices are really reasonable.
Starter Package ($39)
It comes with 40x50cm canvas, 400ml paints, 2 syringes, 1 squirt bottle or water gun. Coveralls, shoe covers, safety glasses are included.
Weekday Happy Hour ($34)
Mon-Fri excluding PH. 3-6pm (last booking 5pm). Includes everything in the starter package.

Additional information,
- Splat Paint House uses high quality, child-safe tempera paint from New Zealand. It does not have any unpleasant chemical odours and is environmentally friendly and non-toxic, formulated to international safety standards. It is also gluten-free, and does not contain dairy, egg, gluten, soy or peanut products, by-products or derivatives. In short, you don't have to worry about the paint.
- Suppose the paint stains your body or hair, don't fret. It will wash off in the shower easily
- Keep in mind that food and drinks are not allowed in the studio
- Lockers are available for you to stow away your belongings. However, if you want to take pictures you are free to take your phone/cameras in. You could tag them on Facebook (@splatpainthouse) and Instagram (#splatpainthouse).
- Although there are no rules when it comes to how you want to express your creativity, please be mindful not to splash water, no running around, standing on top of benches or tables or tracking paint outside the studio. And it is basic common sense plus courtesy that you don't go around splattering paint over other people's canvas (unless of course, they explicitly asked you to).
- The space is available for private parties. The space can hold up to 30 pax comfortably so you can consider booking it for birthday parties, corporate team bonding, hens parties etc
We had an absolutely amazing time at Splat Paint House. I would love to do this fun activity again. If you are artistically inclined or looking for a different sort of activity to unwind or have kids (aged 3 years and up), you should definitely consider visiting this splatter paint studio for a session of unbridled fun. And best of all, you can walk away with your masterpiece without having to clean up.
