A Few Of My Favourite Things (3)

The other day I was going through some of my old blog posts (I have plenty of *cringe* moments when I do this) and I realized that I have completely abandoned a segment of the blog that I had enthusiastically started a few years ago.

The phrase ‘A Few Of My Favourite Things’ is pretty self-explanatory isn't it? But since I haven't revisited this segment in a while, allow me to elaborate a bit more. The idea behind the segment stemmed from the intention of sharing specific foods/dishes/beverages in Singapore that I love. It casts a much wider net in the Singapore’s food scene to include local snacks, confectionery, street foods, beverages, desserts and festive local specialties. The benefit of this segment is the inclusion of all the “must-try” edibles in my opinion that may not feature in independent restaurant reviews. The items that I list can either be something that I’ve consumed multiple times or something I’ve tried only once. Anything that leaves a big enough impression on me will be included because it is my blog and my rules 😆

Somehow in the midst of focusing on recipes, book reviews, restaurant reviews, outdoor activity recommendations and product/service collaboration requests, the existence of this segment completely slipped my mind. Anyway, better late than never so I am kick-starting it again.

If you have read this segment before then you will know that it features 5 of my favourite things in no particular order of preference. And if you didn’t know then you do now.

Without further ado, here goes,

1. Avocado Toast from Carrotsticks and Cravings

As you may be well aware, an avocado toast is an open sandwich made with mashed or sliced avocados on thick toasted bread usually seasoned with salt, pepper and hints of citrus. Optional ingredients can include poached eggs, pesto, microgreens, nuts and seeds, red pepper flakes, feta, dukkah and tomatoes. This is a wholesome and hearty dish although it can be quite high in calories.

I always go for avocado toast if I spot it on a menu. Not only do I find it delicious and (reasonably) healthy, but it visually appeals to my food blogger sensibilities. Yes, I am one of the annoying people who keeps posting pictures of avo toast on their Instagram feed 😬

I have had plenty of renditions of avocado toasts all over Singapore. This breakfast/brunch dish is a café staple in Singapore and extremely popular. I prefer mine with poached eggs and an array of interesting toppings.

One of my favourite avocado toasts in Singapore is the ‘Smashed Avo on Sourdough with Poached Eggs’ from Carrotsticks & Cravings. Their rendition has perfectly ripe avocado on thick slices of sourdough topped with herbs, two perfectly poached eggs, dukkah, crunchy nuts and seeds and a generous smattering of feta cheese.

2. Wild Mushroom Fried Rice from Bistro Gardenasia

Last year, we visited Bistro Gardenasia nestled in the green lungs of the Kranji Farming countryside. We loved the secluded location, ambience and were pleasantly surprised at the menu which had an interesting mix of Western and local food. The bistro offers many dishes that are light, vibrant and healthy featuring fresh produce from the surrounding local farms.

When it comes to the local cuisine, I love a simple fried rice but it isn’t often that I find that many options that suit my dietary preferences. I ordered the Wild Mushroom Fried Rice the first time and I liked it so much that I now order it every time.

It is an extremely simple, no-frills dish but is executed quite well. I love the flavour imparted by the wild mushrooms and when eaten along with the condiment makes for a tasty and satisfying meal. Note that this fried rice contains eggs.

Considering how much my children love going to this place, I’m sure I will be ordering this dish again and again.

3. Banana Pancake from Miam Miam

I’m letting you in on a little secret. I don’t really fancy having pancakes or waffles as a meal for breakfast or brunch. Probably it’s because I don’t prefer starting my day on a sweet note. If I do happen to eat something sweet in the morning, it is because I don’t have a choice and not because I want to. For breakfast or brunch, I prefer taking the savoury route all the way. Having said that, I don’t mind having a smaller serving of a pancake or waffle as dessert at the end of a meal.

I love the Banana Pancake at Miam Miam. I have had it a few times and I enjoy it every time. A thick fluffy pancake topped with caramelized bananas, two scoops of vanilla ice-cream, crunchy nuts, chocolate sauce and a dusting of icing sugar. All the textures and flavours comes together in perfect harmony to create an amazing dessert.

Can’t wait to have it again 😊

4. Peanut Butter Thick Toast at ToastBox

Okay, I have lost count of how many times I have eaten this. I absolutely love peanut butter and will readily go for anything that contains this amazingly versatile ingredient. I get mildly offended when people are not as gung-ho about peanut butter as I am. But I know that when it comes to peanut butter the reception is generally mixed - some love it while others can’t stand it. A few might even be allergic and justifiably steer clear of it. Let’s just agree that purpose of peanut butter in the earthly realm is not to spark arguments but only to spread happiness to those who are “nuts” about it 🙋

The Peanut Butter Thick Toast at ToastBox is one of their signature items. With generously thick toast which is crusty on the outside yet soft on the inside slathered with a generous layer of rich and creamy peanut butter, it is an absolute delight. I love the little wooden pick that they give you to poke the little toast squares.

I haven’t had the Peanut Butter Thick Toast in a while and writing this post is generating some powerful cravings right now. Need to head out soon to get my peanut butter fix!

5. Date Pudding at Artichoke

In one of my previous segments, I’ve already listed the Sticky Date Pudding from PS. Café as one of my favourite things. Well, now I have another favourite date-based dessert in Singapore.

I tried this dessert during a recent visit to Artichoke. I was debating between the baklava pie and the date pudding and ended up choosing the latter. I’m so glad I did!

The Date Pudding wasn’t like how I imagined it would be at all. It was such a surprise mixture of flavours and textures that it took me a while to appreciate everything on my spoon. You have warm and moist date pudding with squidgy coffee jelly cubes and delightfully salty crunchy peanut caramel; all of which are swimming in a pool of rich luscious smoked milk custard. This unconventional creation may not be the best looking dessert out there but it is rich, exotic, silky, crunchy, sweet and salty all at the same time.

I would definitely order it again 👍

                   ******************************************

So that wraps up the third series of ‘A Few Of My Favourite Things’. I had fun putting this blog post together. I hope you have enjoyed reading it.

If you have any specific favourite dishes and foods that you think I must try, please do let me know.

Till next time (which hopefully won’t be years from now 😅)

Cheers,
Megha
