Restaurant review: Super Loco Robertson Quay, Singapore

Last year in October, I planned to meet up with one of my close friends for drinks and dinner. For the venue, we chose Super Loco, a Mexican-inspired 'Cocina Y bar' resonating a fun, festive and casual environment. My love of Mexican food is well documented on my blog and for a Friday evening, the two of us couldn't think of a more suitable place to hang out.

Super Loco at Robertson Quay opened in 2014 and is located along the Singapore River at The Quayside, beside Intercontinental Hotel.

I have always loved going to the hip Robertson Quay enclave. I used to go there frequently before my children were born. It used to be a common occurrence to have dinner at one of the many restaurants there with either my husband or my University friends and then saunter over to Laurent Bernard Chocolatier for dessert 😊

Super Loco at Robertson Quay boasts an awesome location by the Singapore river. My friend and I reached the restaurant before the reservation time so we could spend some time chatting while walking along the river and taking pictures.

You really can't miss the restaurant. It is the cheerful vibe and bright colors that catches your attention almost immediately.

I could tell that this place was very popular with both the local crowd as well as expats, judging by how quickly the tables were filling up. Loco means crazy so just by the name, you can tell that this is going to be a fun place to hang out.

The space is large and feels inviting and festive. There were plenty of tables which were arranged in different configurations - outdoor and indoor seating as well as high and low seating options. A rock rubble wall encases the kitchen. I loved the use of bright and bold colors for the décor. The pinks, yellows and greens show up in the furniture, the long bar counter, festive lighting and the wall art which reflect the spirit of the streets of Mexico. The pops of color adds to the lively quotient of the restaurant.

At the time of our visit, the Covid-19 restrictions allowed only two diners per table. Super Loco had modified the table configuration to suit two diners.

We were greeted by a friendly staff member who handed us the menus. I was impressed with the innovative menu. There were lots of choices even for vegetarians.

Thumbs up for the great alcohol beverage selection. From cocktails to beers, wine and tequila, they have everything covered. The bar also features a refreshing selection of non-alcoholic drinks commonly found on the streets of Mexico such as fruit based sodas and coolers.

We chose indoor seating but we still had a view of the river. We really liked the ambience of the place. Even though the restaurant was full, the tables were spaced far enough to enjoy conversation. The laid-back atmosphere contributed to the relaxed weekend energy.

We spent some time mulling over the drinks and the food menu. We ordered a drink each and a few dishes to share.

Due to the dim lighting inside Super Loco and my limited skills in photo editing, I apologize for the quality of the photographs in this post.

Passionfruit Smashito
Passion fruit smashito was refreshing, zingy, with the lovely flavour of passion fruit coming through. The sweetness was just right for me. A great way to start a meal.

Recommended.

Sangria Rojo
The Sangria Rojo was a bit of a letdown. I felt that there was too much ice which diluted the drink. And the fruits included mostly apple with only one slice of orange. As a personal preference, I felt that it could have done with more refreshing citrus hints as well as berries.

Trio - Chips, Guac, Salsa
When I'm at a Mexican restaurant, by default I will order chips with guacamole and salsa. I couldn't do without them!

This was a nice appetizer. The chips were thin, light and crispy. The guacamole was fresh, slightly chunky and moreish. The salsa was amazing. It had a smooth texture (just the way I like it) and was very nicely seasoned and spiced.

Recommended.

Cactus Frito Taco
As far as I could recall, I had never eaten cactus before so I knew I was going to order it when I spotted it on the menu.

The cactus frito taco comes in a single serving but our waitress thoughtfully cut it into halves for us. It consisted of a soft corn taco with crispy cactus, charred cauliflower florets, salad, and cilantro drizzled with a creamy dressing, dollops of guacamole and served with a lime wedge.

All in all, the taco tasted good but not great. It could have done with a bit more oomph and spice. I was not quite sure what to make of the cactus. I think I need to try it in other dishes so I can better appreciate the flavour and texture. On that note, if you want to try more cactus dishes, you can go to Super Loco Customs House outlet.

Veg Enchilada
We ordered the vegetarian enchilada. This dish which visually reminded me of the Mexican flag, came with soft tortilla wraps containing rice & pumpkin, resting on a bed of salsa and guacamole, drizzled with sour cream, chopped tomatoes, cilantro, microgreens and pumpkin seeds.

This dish was a good combination of flavours and textures. Everything came together well. It was delicious and hearty.

Recommended.

Huitlacoche
I had to order the quesadilla because it is one of my most favourite Mexican dishes.

The huitlacoche consisted of toasted large wheat flour tortillas filled with flavourful Mexican truffle, oyster mushrooms, sweet corn and milky cotija cheese. The extra cheese on top and green chilli salsa verde made it moreish. Even though we were quite full by then, we managed to polished it off. Would definitely order this again.

Highly recommended.

Super Churros
Who doesn't like churros right?

We were hit by the lovely perfume of cinnamon as soon as the dessert was placed in front of us. The churros at Super Loco were hot and crispy. They were a bit chunky for my liking but dunking them in the luxurious chocolate sauce more than satisfied my sweet tooth so I can easily overlook that.

I may go for the Torta De Chocolate or the Affogato Mexicano next time.

For those who have an insatiable appetite for chilli, there are some really nice condiments that you can liberally douse your dishes with.

We spent a wonderful evening at Super Loco Robertson Quay. We didn't realize how quick time flew by. I would definitely like to visit again with my husband.

If you happen to eat too much (which is quite likely), don't fret. You can always go for a long stroll by the Singapore river which is quite lovely at night. This is exactly what we did.

My verdict:
Super Loco Robertson Quay is a great spot to hang out on a weekend. With a lovely location by the iconic Singapore river and an infectious fun vibe, it is the ideal place to unwind while sipping a cocktail (or two) and enjoying some Mexican food. The ambience and service are top notch. The portion size of the dishes are reasonable. The quality of food is satisfactory - there were some hits and misses but overall, we enjoyed the dining experience. In terms of price, Super Loco can be categorized as mid-range with an expected damage of $60-80 per person.

I recommend this place for couples, colleagues, ladies' night and small groups of people.
