Enjoy Superfood at Home: Açaí Delivery in Singapore

In the age of social media and food trends, I would be surprised if you haven't heard of Açaí. You may have come across images of the vibrant purple smoothie bowls laden with a multitude of nutritious toppings doing the rounds on your Facebook or Instagram feeds. I don't know about you but for me, they are very hard to ignore.

Açaí (pronounced ah-sigh-EE) berries are a Brazilian "superfruit." They are native to the Amazon region where they serve as a staple food and are harvested from Açaí palm trees. It is said that tribes of the Amazon rainforest have been using açaí berries to treat various ailments for thousands of years.

To make them edible, these berries are soaked to soften the tough outer skin and then mashed to form a dark purple paste. Fresh açaí berries have a short shelf life and aren't available outside of where they are grown. As an export, they are sold as a frozen fruit purée, dried powder or pressed juice. They have an earthy taste that is often described as a cross between blackberries and unsweetened chocolate.

In recent years, these berries have gained global popularity and are touted for being particularly beneficial to health and well-being. Açaí berries most powerful health benefits come from plant compounds. The most notable one among these is anthocyanins, which gives this fruit their deep purple color and act as antioxidants which neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals in the body. There are other alleged health benefits such as improving cholesterol levels, anti-cancer properties, boosting brain function and hydrating the skin but these haven't been conclusively proven.

I had my first açaí bowl a few years ago and I was absolutely blown away by how good it tasted. I soon introduced to my family and my twins especially love it. Pssst.....they think it is chocolate pudding (and I haven't bothered to correct them).

Ordering is a cinch you guys. You just go to their website and browse their selection of açaí bowls. You then select the size (medium or large) and then select the drizzle (you can choose from peanut butter, honey, nutella or skip the drizzle entirely). You can also choose to add on a variety of superfoods like chia seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, cranberries and summer fruits like berries, banana, kiwi, pineapple and mango. Once you are done, all you have to do is provide your address and complete the payment. Then sit back and wait for your bowls of goodness to arrive.

I ordered three of their medium-sized bowls. The delivery was prompt and the bowls were packed nicely and labelled.

Here are my thoughts on the three different bowls that I ordered. Full credit to Owari photography for the gorgeous images taken from the website.

Berry Berries

$10.10 – $15.20

If you are in need of a refreshing summer treat (which the people of Singapore are in need of pretty much all year round!) then nothing beats the Berry Berries bowl. It is loaded with all the antioxidants you will need and a special Mango-Açaí blend that makes it “berry-special” indeed 😊

The Berry Berries bowl contains a special açaí mango base, granola, blueberries, raisins and almonds.

I ordered this bowl with a drizzle of nutella and added-on pumpkin seeds. We are a berry loving family and my children generally dive into anything containing berries. I loved digging my spoon through the various layers getting a big bite of all the toppings along with the smooth açaí all at once. So creamy and delicious. The nutella just added that chocolate indulgence. It is not necessary though. I'm sure the bowl would taste good even without it.

Signature Açaí Bowl

$10.20 – $15.60

This is one of their most popular açaí bowls. The signature açaí  base is served with the ten of the most popular toppings, imparting the perfect mouthful all in one bite.

You have açaí with granola, sliced bananas and strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, raisin, pumpkin seeds, coconut flakes, cranberries and chia seeds. Phew!

I ordered this bowl with a peanut butter drizzle and no add-on's. To be honest, the pumpkin seeds that I ordered for the previous bowl was such a generous portion that I was able to sprinkle some over this one too. Compared to peanut butter, I would have preferred almond butter slightly more but that was not an option. I absolutely loved the freshness, taste and texture of all the ingredients together. The sweet yet slightly tart and refreshingly cold açaí base came together beautifully with the vibrant fresh and dried fruit, the creamy peanut butter and the granola, pumpkin seeds and coconut flakes gave it a nice crunch. It tasted like dessert that is good for you (if that is not a win then I dunno what is).

Tropical Açaí

$9.00 – $13.80

Warm and sunny with fruits like pineapple, mango and banana, tropical açaí feels like it is made in the tropics. I added-on some kiwi to add to that tropical look and taste. What is amazing is that these seasonal fruits are always in season so you can enjoy it anytime. With coconut flakes sprinkled all over, you will surely go nuts for this bowl.

This bowl has açaí with pineapple, banana, mango, raisin, coconut flakes, walnut, cranberries and chia seeds.

I chose honey as the drizzle for this bowl but honestly, you don't need it. The sweetness of the rest of the ingredients combined is enough on its own and you could do without the additional sugar. If you really need more, probably real maple syrup could be a healthier alternative as a drizzle to honey plus it's sweetness is slightly more mellow compared to honey.

You have other bowls like Fruity Delight, Nutty Nature and DIY Açaí bowls. You can even buy a pint of the Açaí puree if you want to take a stab at it yourself.

In summary, I and my family loved the açaí bowls that we ordered. It would be really hard to pick a winner. Each one had subtle differences but they all tasted great nonetheless. I loved the texture and flavour of the açaí base, how fresh and sweet the fruits were and the winning combination of ingredients. I found the portion size to be quite good and the pricing quite reasonable as well.

I'd say purple is the new black.

Highly recommended 👍
